Australian Spotted Ducks
$8.20The beautiful Australian Spotted is a bantam breed of duck that has been in existence for just over 100 years. They were bred and refined in Pennsylvania over the span of about 20 years, from the 1920s-1940s. There were at least three breeders involved in the development of these ducks, and they were exhibited at poultry shows as early as 1928.
All three of the known breeders used the same foundation breeds to create the Australian Spotted; Mallards, Calls, Northern Pintails, and an unknown Australian wild duck. In each case they housed all of the birds together and let them interbreed at will. After a few generations, a distinct looking duck began to emerge. The best offspring were selected for further breeding and became the first generations of the Australian Spotted breed. They come in three different color varieties; greenhead, bluehead and silverhead. All three can be interbred and will still produce purebred ducks in one of the three varieties.
Australian Spotted drakes resemble mallards in coloring, but they have ruddy colored spots on their back and sides as well as a white chest and white flight feathers. Females appear to have “frosted” mallard coloring with many small dark spots sprinkled throughout their markings. Ducks will lay white, blue, or green eggs and they can produce anywhere from 50-125 eggs per year. They are reported to be the best layers in the bantam duck class.
Buff Ducks
$8.20The Buff or Buff Orpington was developed by the William Cook family who lived in the Orpington area of Kent, England in the early 1900s. It was developed as a multipurpose bird, with the ability to lay good quantities of eggs along with having the size and feather color to make a good roasting duck. Some even claim that the buff colored feathers are easier to pluck than the white Pekin feathers.
Though the Buff breeds true (progeny have the same color as parents), they originated from a variety of breeds. W. Powell-Owen described this breeding program in 1918 “Runners were mated to Aylesburys, Runners to Rouens and Runners to Cayugas, and the progeny were crossed with one another until the buff plumage was secured.” They entered the United States in 1908. Interestingly, they are the only poultry breed admitted in the American Standard of Perfection with their name as a color only. Orpington should have been used to describe the breed and Buff for the variety. They remain a very beautiful and popular breed.

The exact origins of Call Ducks is debatable, but it is believed they were developed in the Netherlands in the 17th or 18th century. They were initially bred to lure or “call” wild ducks into traps or nets. The small size and loud quacking of Call Ducks made them effective decoys. Hunters used them to attract wild ducks closer, making it easier to catch wild waterfowl for food and sport.
Please note, Call Ducks can fly very well. Historically Call Ducks have been bred with short, wide heads (brachycephalic) and short bills. Here at Metzer Farms, we are not going to stray from the APA guidelines, but we aim to breed a naturally shaped duck – just much smaller. We feel this will allow them to be more productive in terms of fertility, longevity and hatchability.
Cayuga Ducks

The Cayuga breed is thought to have been developed from the wild Black Duck breed in the region of Lake Cayuga in New York. This makes it one of the few duck breeds originating in the United States. Prior to the arrival of the Pekin breed, they were the bird of choice for meat production in the Northeast. Once the Pekin arrived with its white feathers and cleaner appearing carcass, the Cayuga quickly lost its appeal. They remain a very hardy duck and many of their eggs have varying degrees of gray in the shell color. On rare occasions they will lay a pure black egg.

Duclair Ducks
$8.20The Duclair duck is a strain first developed in France and recreated at Metzer Farms in association with Stone Church Farm in upstate New York. This breed will do well as pasture or free range grown. The Duclairs are used by some of the most discerning chefs because of their rich, elegant flavor. In fact, a Michelin three star restaurant in New York includes the Duclair in their menu.
Golden 300 Hybrid Layer Ducks
$8.20Because we sell thousands of edible duck eggs a week, it is important we produce eggs efficiently and consistently. In 1996 we developed the Golden 300 Hybrid as they lay more and larger eggs, have a higher fertility and are calmer than the Khaki Campbell. The Khaki Campbell may be a good egg producer in small flocks but we were never satisfied with their production in our larger commercial flocks. Because of this inconsistency, we developed the Golden 300 Hybrid by crossing and utilizing the attributes of different duck breeds.
The Golden 300 Hybrid females are different shades of brown, from very dark to lighter tan. The male can either have shades of brown or have black on them. They do not retain this characteristic in future generations. So if you mate a Golden 300 Hybrid with another Golden 300 Hybrid, their progeny will hatch in blacks, yellows and browns with no relationship between sex and color.
As adults the females range in color from a very light brown to a very dark brown, often with areas of white on them. Males can appear much like a Rouen, or a dull looking Cayuga or with white and dark markings.
Golden Cascade Ducks
$8.20We’re thrilled to be offering the Golden Cascade this year! Our breeding stock came directly from Dave and Millie Holderread in 2025, the original developers of the breed. The Holderreads reached out to us to continue their breeding efforts and help increase the availability of this exceptional duck throughout the U.S.
Developed in Oregon in the late 1970s, the Golden Cascade was created as a multi-purpose duck with high egg production, efficient meat yield, a calm temperament, and unique coloring that made gender identification easier in ducklings. The breed was officially introduced in 1984 and quickly became known for its productivity and hardiness.
Golden Cascade ducklings are beautifully patterned in warm fawn-buff and brown tones with golden highlights. Adult males have a chestnut chest, cream or tan underbody, and a brownish head with a soft green sheen. Females are fawn or buff with delicate brown penciling and a noticeable facial stripe. Both sexes feature a satin-green or brown wing speculum that glimmers in the light.
Today’s Golden Cascades remain exceptionally hardy, productive ducks, often laying between 165-240 eggs per year. We’re proud to carry on the Holderreads’ work in preserving and improving this remarkable breed, a true gem for anyone looking for a friendly, efficient, and striking addition to their flock!
Jumbo Pekin Ducks
$8.20At Metzer Farms, we take pride in raising the finest Jumbo Pekin ducks, known for their impressive size and exceptional egg-laying capabilities. The Jumbo Pekin is our largest strain of Pekin. Commercial Pekin ducks are produced by crossing a male from a large, meaty strain of Pekin with a female Pekin from a medium sized, highly fertile good egg producing strain. With this cross, you get a large number of ducklings from the female that grow into good sized birds because of the size of the male. The Jumbo Pekin ducklings are from a pure male line.

The Khaki Campbell duck breed is one of the more famous and popular duck breeds due to its excellent egg production. It was introduced in 1901 by Mrs. Adele Campbell of Gloucestershire, England. She experimented with Runners crossed with Rouen and Mallards but never revealed the exact genetic makeup of her Campbells. Though they have been turned into an exhibition type breed, she was adamant that her birds were designed for production, not the exhibition hall.

Magpie Ducks
$8.20The Magpie is originally from Britain and was first bred after World War 1 but their exact ancestry is not entirely known. Breeding documentation dates back to the 1920’s, and it has been said that their ancestry may have included the Indian Runner. Magpies were first exported to the United States in 1963. Today Magpies are commonly raised for showing.
Magpies make a great addition to any yard with their black and white splash of color, their quiet nature, and their calm demeanor.
Mallard Ducks
$8.20Mallards are native to most countries in the Northern Hemispheres. It is thought that all domestic ducks except Muscovy are derived from the wild Mallard, or “Greenhead” as some call them. They are a small, flying duck that is hunted widely. Our Mallards retain this excellent flying ability. In addition, they do an excellent job of hatching and raising one or two broods of ducklings a year. Mallards start to fly for short spurts at 10-12 weeks and are flying very well by 16 weeks. It is also at about 14-16 weeks that the males get their beautiful coloring – prior to that both the males and females are similarly colored in shades of brown.
Muscovy – Black Duck
$8.20The Black Muscovy is a new addition to our duck offerings – In addition to White Muscovy, we have now Black Muscovy as well. Black is the native color of wild Muscovy originally found in the swamps and rivers of Brazil. Over time the commercial birds being raised for meat have been bred to be white just like chickens, turkeys, ducks, geese, pheasants, etc. so they dress cleaner.
The progeny of the Black Muscovy we produce are not 100% black. They are generally black, and in good light, you can see a glossy greenish hue on their backs. They also are characterized by white on their heads and neck. We imported breeding stock from Grimaud Freres of France to produce their R41 strain of black muscovy
